BOOK NOW THE PLAY OF DANIEL (Based on the story of Daniel and the Lion's Den) - Friday March 23 at 8pm & Saturday March 24 at 2pm and 8pm

A medieval opera based on the tale of Daniel and the Lion's Den. Written 800 years ago by students of Beauvais Cathedral in France, this rarely performed masterpiece of medieval culture employs poetry, music, visual spectacle, drama, suspense, humour, and tragedy. The plot draws on various episodes from the biblical Daniel stories. Belshazzar's father, King Nebuchadnezzar, has destroyed the temple of the Jews. Now his son rules over a threatened kingdom. One day a mysterious hand writes three strange words on the castle wall. The wise Hebrew Daniel is summoned and interprets the words, which predict the king's demise. A rival, King Darius, appears with his forces and usurps the throne, but envious princes undermine the new king's respect for Daniel and he is thrown into the lion's den, where wondrous angels save him. Performed by a cast of renowned local singers, and with the beautiful neo-gothic St David's Cathedral in Hobart serving as auditorium, stage and backdrop, The Play of Daniel is sure to be theatre at its most powerful. Sung in Latin and Narrated in English. Director - Don Gay. Musical Director - Philippa Moyes. Score Realisation - Ralph Middenway. Costume Designer - William Dowd. Featuring Michael Lampard as Darius, Nicholas King as Daniel, Phillip Joughin as Belshazzar/Habbakuk and Allison Farrow as Belshazzar's Queen.
